Lesbian Lawyer

Today we met with our lawyer for the first time, yet another addition to Team Flipper. We really liked her. She went over all the details of second parent adoption, estate planning, and name change with us (another post forthcoming on *that* issue). The end result will be pricey, but worth it, and we're hoping to deduct some to all of it as part of the Adoption Tax Credit.

Our lawyer is "family" and she and her partner have a daughter. Her firm specializes in LGBT law and that feels right. Also, her office is in the Emp*re St*te Bldg, so on our way up to the office we saw a man in a large King Kong outfit. That, I'm guessing, is not part of a typical lawyer's visit.

EDIT: We also did some reconnaissance shopping and picked out Flipper's (first) bed! I was very excited. Then we stopped at P*tSm*rt to get a crate for Maggie; we're taking her on vacation and wanted a secure way to leave her in our B&B room while we're at the beach.

Guess whose bed was more expensive.

We met with our new lawywer last night, too. I feel really relived to finally have some wills in the making. I wish we saw King Kong, but she came to our house, which works well when you have a toddler! I hope your lawyer works out for you.

Sounds like a good match. And King Kong's definitely the clincher. ;)

You definitely can take the adoption-related lawyer costs as part of the Adoption Credit. Just not the will/name change part. And I know, at least for the name change, that that's a chunk-o'-change. We didn't have a lawyer do ours and it still was a lot! In MA it's $50...grrr....

We definitely did not see King Kong on our lawyer visit, nor do we ever have any gorillas hanging out in our law firm. LOL!
I'm glad you guys are taking the appropriate steps. We are behind on that and there is no excuse!

I've been meaning to ask you this for forever and keep forgetting. You guys seem to asterisk out letters from seemingly random words, so I can't figure out what the reason is... can you explain?

Sandra,
It's so anyone who puts those words into a search engine (PetSmart, e.g.) won't find our blog.

My understanding is that 2nd Parent adoption does not qualify for the Federal Adoption Tax Credit.

However, that may just be for legally related spouses. I don't think so, but it's worth double-checking.

(Under "Qualified adoption expenses do not include" is listed "For the adoption of your spouse's child")
