Hands, The Post

Well, we still don't have a digital camera (though we seriously appreciate the advice about which to get and it helps!) so I am going to *write* about my hands.

The noticeable thing about my hands (and someday I promise to post a pic of this 'cause it's really weird) is that my thumbs don't match. My left thumb is short and stumpy with a wide short nail and looks kind of deformed; my right thumb looks normal, i.e. taller than the stumpy one, normal shaped nail.

I was born this way; my parents joke that the stumpy thumb looks more like my mom's thumbs and the taller one looks like my dad's thumbs. I met a girl at camp who had the same thing with the non-matching thumbs. We were both very curious about why it would happen. I suppose it might be an extraordinarily minor birth defect?

hey! I was told about hammer thumbs years ago but I just tried to google more info & can't find jack. But here is what I was told some 15 years ago: hammer thumbs are the anti-murderer's thumbs. Murderer's thumbs are when the short thumb is on the dominant hand. Hammer thumbs are when the shorty is on the non-dominant hand. While having a shorty on dom. could indicate an aggressive personality, having short non dom thumb could indicate that logic will override will...but who knows!

Oh! I get it!! So I have a hammer thumb, because the short thumb is my left thumb (which is definitely, definitely not my dominant hand, I am quite the righty). So I am not aggressive. Well, that is for darn sure. I wonder what causes it??

I will recommend a Sony Cybershot 4 or 5 mega pixels, this are the easiest to use digital cameras and not so expensive :)

Here is what you are looking for, I believe. My husband has both his thumbs like this. ROTF! He told all of us that the dr dropped him as a baby and the nurse accidentilly rolled a cart over them!!! LOL!

BRACHYDACTYLY, TYPE D; BDD , is the scientific so called medical terms. Makes me think teradactyl! Anyways, do a search on that and you may get some more info. They are rare and that means not much internet devotion as far as causes, pics, you know the routine.

Hope it helps. oh and whatever camera you get, lots of megapixels is best!

OMG! Im 39 and just learned these lame thumbs have a name. I have seen a handful of people with these thumbs in my life. One person had the same last name I did. ANDERSON. Anyone related to ANDERSON (Choctaw Indian Blood) or GEESLIN? I have no idea where the thumbs came from. My boys do not have them. Our friend who has the same last name, he passed it to his son but not his daughter.

I know they are really lame looking, but try having one normal thumb! I met a gal that had one stump and one normal and that was weird! Back in my teenage days, I had friends that called me "STUBS".

Whatever! Im over it. Well kinda. At least I have arms and hands and thumbs. So Im thankful.

I have met only one other person with thumbs like mine and boy was I glad when I met her. Mine are both stubby, and I've used the excuse of "my thumbs were caught in a door" for years. It was nice to know that I wasn't the only one. I've done some searching on the net and haven't found much. The one thing that keeps coming up is brachydactyly type D. I wish there was more out there...it'd be easier to explain to the people that stare at them.

I have short stumpy thumbs on both hands. the nail is wide, its like the knuckle is closer to the nail. I have met maybe 3 other people with the same thumbs but never until now have i known the name for them.

Once as a child a doctor took photos of them, but thats all I remember.
I havent seen one of each.
Is it inherited? no one in my family has them.
a friend calls me stumps too
lol

Wow...all this info about my stubby thumb! I had stubby since birth; thought birth defect but got to thinking that if we sucked our thumb en-utero could it possibly be we stunted its growth? Just wondering why.......

Short Thumbs, I have them on both hands, 3 out of 4 sisters in my family has it. My parents don't know where it came from. I've read alot about it, but still don't really know what causes it or if it's a symptom of something. I feel normal. Noone has ever noticed my thumbs that I can remember but people are intrigued by them. Soem say it's a was they destinguised royalty.

I have one hammer thumb on right hand, which is my dominate hand. My grandfather had two. My father had none. I have three sons and only one son has the hammer thumbs. He has two. Some of my aunts have them also. About 24 years ago, I broke one of my fingers. The doctor told me they were a trait coming from small stature people. He also said I probably had a drarf in my family. My fathers family is short. They are also short legged. Some of my aunts are not even 5 foot. I have always been troubled about this and wondered if it was true. If anyone has heard anything like this I would love to know.

I was told the hammer thumb is a sign of royalty that goes all the way back when there was inbreeding going on you know with royal people cause they were only allowed to breed with other royal people, meaning their brothers and sisters and cousins and aunts and uncles.
