Family

My mom and I were having a conversation about how soon my elusive father is coming to visit. She fusses about him but they get along in the end.

"Maybe it will be nice to be together", she said finally. "After all, we're both his blood grandparents." (I think she said "blood" to differentiate from the steps.)

I pointed out that no, in fact, neither of them are Jo's "blood" grandparents. She was startled, and said, "Oh. I actually forgot."

That's the cutest thing ever. I can imagine that it felt good to hear that slip-up.

Good back-to-back posts: I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats. :)

My mom was startled by the fact that Z. has dark eyes. She actually said "maybe she'll be one of those babies whose eyes get lighter when she grows up." (And which babies would those be?)

Anyway, when I called her on being surprised, she said "both you and A. have light eyes."

S, that's hysterical.
I mean, I did that talking to a lesbian couple with a baby when I was 13, and I thought I was kinda a freak for it. Pretty funny that real grown-ups would do it. But it just goes to show how much they've normalized their sense of your parental relationship (into a framework it doesn't quite fit in, sure, but still).

David's sick, so we won't be visiting any time soon, I'm afraid, but I had to tell you that we were looking for baby photos on here to cheer him up and when we got to the photo of him sleeping, he started poking the screen excitedly. I scrolled down to CO and JO together and he got very quiet and just admired. Looking forward to new pics! (Yeah, I forgot to bookmark the flikr)

My mom has made some similar comments that I've found incredibly sweet. Something to the effect that Speck will definitely be a cutie because both True & I were cute as babies. I had to remind her that really only one of us has the genetic capability to pass along the cuteness :)

Yeah, we were surprised at the number of people who asked me, "does ___ run in your family?" Including some people with serious science backgrounds.
